Oat Kernel Oil (Refined)
Refined oat oil is typically a pale yellow to golden colour with a light, smooth texture that absorbs well into the skin without being greasy. Refining results in a mild, neutral scent, making it suitable for a wide range of cosmetic formulations.
Oat oil is rich in essential fatty acids and contains a balance of lipids that closely resembles the skin's natural oils.
The typical fatty acid profile includes:
• Linoleic Acid (Omega-6): ~35-45%
• Oleic Acid (Omega-9): ~25-35%
• Palmitic Acid: ~15-20%
• Stearic Acid: ~2-4%
• Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) (Omega-3): ~1-2%
In addition to its fatty acids, oat oil is also high in ceramides and antioxidants, such as vitamin E, which contribute to its skin-nourishing properties.
Oat oil is extracted from the seeds (groats) of the oat plant (Avena sativa). Oats are harvested, and the seeds are separated from the plant before being cold-pressed to extract the oil, ensuring that its beneficial nutrients, such as lipids and antioxidants, are preserved. Gentle refining removes impurities and any strong natural odours, resulting in a light, clear oil that is ideal for use in cosmetics and skincare products.
Oat oil is deeply moisturising, helping to refresh and protect the skin's natural barrier and retain moisture, making it ideal for dry and sensitive skin. Rich in antioxidants like vitamin E, and ceramides, Oat oil can help improve overall skin resilience, provide relief from scalp dryness and flakiness and be used to add moisture and shine to hair, making it smoother and more manageable. Due to its mildness, oat oil is often included in formulations for baby care products, such as lotions and creams, to protect delicate skin.
